Monthly Test

Mathematics

How many students out there thinking that additional mathematics is much tougher than modern mathematics? Is this results from your own research between additional mathematics and modern mathematics? Or simply because your senior telling you that? Whatever is your answer is, I would say that there is no different between these two. Even there is couple of topics are same and there is some extension. Let us take one of the chapter, simultaneous equation which can be seen in both mathematics. So, do you have any idea on this?

Integration and differentiation

What do you know about the correlation between integration and differentiation? Have you heard of direct and indirect? Ahead and reverse? This is exactly similar to that because you’ll find any equation by integrating and differentiating any given equation. I’m highlighting here because there is student where complaining that cannot understand integration even very good in differentiation and vice versa. And for sure there is student also not understand at all both topics.

So, what you should do? Just leave it? Or don’t know what are the action items? Here are couple of suggestions that I would suggest so that you can remove the burden that makes the difficulty. First of all list down all the formulas related starting for differentiation and later for integration. It would be recommended if you could list it as for sub-topic also. Is that all? At least you have done or started something right? So, now you know all the formulas that necessary to be used in both differentiation and integration.

Do you know what you should do next? Just copy every example given for every sub-topic and redo it for at least five times. Repeat it for the sixth time without the solution given to you in your reference book. Believe me if you do this, I guarantee that you can do on your own when do it for the eleventh time.

Pusat Tuisyen

Para pelajar dan ibu bapa lebih cenderung untuk memilih pusat tuisyen sebagai tempat untuk mendapatkan khidmat tuisyen. Ini memang benar dan tidak boleh dinafikan bahawa pusat tuisyen adalah seumpama sekolah kedua yang hanya mementingkan kurikulum. Namun begitu pusat tuisyen tidak semestinya mempunyai guru yang boleh melanjutkan masa pengajarannya dengan menyesuaikan topik yang perlu dihabiskan. Ini adalah kerana guru tersebut kemungkinan telah diambil sebagai sebagai tutor atau cikgu tuisyen yang mana mempunyai halangan masa dan ruang bilik tuisyen. Selain itu, ada kemungkinan juga yang cikgu tersebut menghabiskan tempoh pengajarannya di atas sebab-sebab peribadi. Sebagai seorang cikgu, perlulah mempunyai iltizam kepuasan pengajarannya dengan memastikan pelajar-pelajarnya memahami dan mempunyai keyakinan dalam menjawab peperiksaan. Saya di sini lebih mementingkan kepuasan mengajar pelajar-pelajar untuk memahami dan kebolehan menjawab soalan peperiksaan daripada hanya menghabiskan tempoh pengajaran yang dibayar.

Practice, practice, and practice

Why do we need practice in mathematics? Again how do you take mathematics as? As a rule of SPM requirement? Or as a game? You should know which one is your answer because it will determine your result. Some students might ask why it is necessary to know whether it is requirement for SPM for science stream or a game. The main reason behind this is that you should make as fun. So, this mathematics generally and additional mathematics as game. Do you have any idea on what should be your preparation prior to your match (exam)?

Rule number of one this game is practice. This is very simple but cannot be taken simply as simple. You should emphasize yourselves to do as much as possible of questions either from topical questions from any revision book, monthly test, final exam, or previous year’s paper. Practice as many as possible when doing exercise and kick off your plan as soon as possible the moment you start the school even from form four. This is what I call first stage of practice.

Second stage of practice is that you have to practice the questions so that you could familiar with all type of questions. From direct question which asking you as you learned during class to the problem solving questions. Usually this type of question would not be as same as you did once, twice, or thrice but it would give you some idea on how to tackle questions and relate to the formulas that needed. So, this stage of practice is usually will give you some confident level when start solving the questions.

Now we go for the next stage of practice, “speed up” stage. As first stage, we went through how to get familiar with the questions as of topic basis. Followed by second stage by doing more exercises and questions from different sources. Now is the last stage of practice which preparation prior to exam. This is really important because this stage will determine whether you want to score “A” in your additional mathematics. Practicing at this stage shall be done by taking consideration of time constraint.

Practice, practice, and practice only can be done by proper planning of stages. You yourselves can plan on your own if you really good in planning or you’re inside talent. I’m not saying that those students without proper planning on their own cannot score but you need someone plan for you so that can execute it. So, find out how you can do so!

Janjang or Progression

Apakah maksud janjang? Pelajar-pelajar yang menggunakan bahasa inggeris sebagai bahasa pengantara atau lebih dikenali dengan PPSMI berasa agak janggal dengan perkataan “janjang”. Ini adalah kerana perkataan itu sendiri agak janggal kerana tidak pernah didengari sebelum ini. Saya utarakan perkara disebabkan oleh respon daripada pelajar-pelajar sewaktu mengajar kelas pertama matematik tambahan tingkatan lima. Adakah kita semua perasaan dengan perkataan “jujukkan” di dalam matematik tambahan? Persoalan yang ingin saya nyatakan adalah mengenai pengenalan dan pemansuhan PPSMI, siapa yang menjadi mangsa? Penggubal dasar, guru-guru, atau pelajar-pelajar?

Apa yang perlu ditekan di sini adalah pemahaman pelajar-pelajar terhadap topik “Janjang” itu sendiri. Sebagai seorang tutor, saya lebih menekankan pendekatan melalui contoh yang boleh digambarkan oleh pelajar. Dengan cara sedemikian, pelajar-pelajar lebih mudah memahami Janjang. Justeru itu, perlulah ditekankan di sini bahawa perkataan yang mudah difahami perlu diterapkan walaupun bahasa yang lain. Sebagai contoh, “Progression” memberikan penjelasan yang lebih jelas apabila menerangkan apakah janjang itu. Seperti mana yang sedia maklum, “progression” itu sendiri menunjukkan satu maksud peningkatan sama ada positif atau negatif. Positiv atau negative itu sendiri menunjukkan masing-masing peningkatan atau penyusutan.

Setelah istilah topik diterangkan secara memberi contoh yang mudah, barulah rumus-rumus atau formula-formula diterapkan secara sedikit demi sedikit. Dan ini bukan dengan secara langsung dengan menghafal semua rumus tersebut tetapi dengan menentukan sahkan contoh yang diberikan tadi. Dengan ini pelajar-pelajar akan lebih yakin untuk menjawab sebarang bentuk soalan janjang atau lebih dikenali dengan “Progression”.

Progression

What are the differents between arithmetic and geometric progression? I would say most of students are scare of this progression topic even it's not that difficult. If talk about geometric progression, I would say that even those easily understand arithmetic progression claim geometric progression much more difficult. As a student it would be good if you could determine the difficulty specifically relative to arithmetic. However, I bet that you cant do so because there is no such difficulty level relative to arithmetic. For me, as long you have a proper planning in solving the problems regardless of arithmetic or geometric progression, it can be solved as simple as simultaneous equation.
